The 1920s for western culture came with a bang – rightly called the Roaring 20s. It was the decade of making fashion statements, with everybody following the principle of dress to impress sacredly. Newer, unique and bolder fashion styles came in, with lesser regard to upholding existing norms of the society. As the dresses of the time made headlines, so did the makeup skills, which complemented the look, elevating it to another level.
Oh, how the advent of bolder, brighter makeup oozed decadence and exclusivity, stunning all who came within a mile’s radius.
As The Great Gatsby came out, so did the desire to revisit such looks, which are easily created:
- Even Skin Tone
Foundation worked wonders at that time. Applied in an even manner, it aimed to create a perfect, matte complexion, without any contours or highlights. This gave off a rather doll-like look, which was further enhanced with the aid of a light blusher, to magnify the apples of the cheeks. Opted for today, it would be a steal all the attention in a crowd, making you a major attraction.
- The Dramatic Eyes
With dark, kohl-rimmed lines eyes going big at the time, it was no surprise that the look intended was a dramatic one. Usually entailing the use of a dark brown or black eye shadow, smoky eyes were created. It begins lightly within the corners of the eyes, and then expands outwards, usually smudged at the end for an enhanced gloomier effect. Paired with heavy doses of mascara, the eyeliner often winged at the end. Want to make a statement? This is the eye makeup you want.
- Pencil-Thin Eyebrows
Vastly different from what is trending today, thin, long and highly curved eyebrows were the must-have in the 20s. Easily achievable with the help of eyebrow pencils today, any gaps in the middle can be filled up. This means, no need to pluck or wax eyebrows as often. Fashionable and easier? Win-win!
- The Perfect Lip
The carefully-drawn lip was what stole in the show in the 20s. With an enhanced Cupid’s Bow, dark lip colors were sported nonchalantly. Whether it be hues of red, purple, or the dramatic black, lip liners were opted for, to create the perfect edges for a pronounced effect. Bold yet beautiful – this is the lip you want.
It may be impossible to bring the iconic era back, but its charm can be recreated by the perfect Gatsby Makeup look. A glitzy event or a red carpet, a 1920s style costume party or a Gatsby-themed function, a showstopper even today, this look speaks volumes for one’s personality, bound to be a head-turner.
